CVE-2010-3858

Status Candidate

Overview

The setup_arg_pages function in fs/exec.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36, when CONFIG_STACK_GROWSDOWN is used, does not properly restrict the stack memory consumption of the (1) arguments and (2) environment for a 32-bit application on a 64-bit platform, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted exec system call, a related issue to CVE-2010-2240.

Ubuntu Security Notice 1202-1 - Dan Rosenberg discovered that several network ioctls did not clear kernel memory correctly. A local user could exploit this to read kernel stack memory, leading to a loss of privacy. Brad Spengler discovered that stack memory for new a process was not correctly calculated. A local attacker could exploit this to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. Dan Rosenberg discovered that the Linux kernel TIPC implementation contained multiple integer signedness errors. A local attacker could exploit this to gain root privileges. Various other issues were also addressed.

Red Hat Security Advisory 2011-0836-01
Posted Jun 2, 2011
Authored by Red Hat | Site access.redhat.com

Red Hat Security Advisory 2011-0836-01 - The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system. An integer underflow flaw, leading to a buffer overflow, was found in the Linux kernel's Datagram Congestion Control Protocol implementation. This could allow a remote attacker to cause a denial of service. Missing sanity checks were found in setup_arg_pages() in the Linux kernel. When making the size of the argument and environment area on the stack very large, it could trigger a BUG_ON(), resulting in a local denial of service. Various other issues were also addressed.

Mandriva Linux Security Advisory 2010-257
Posted Dec 17, 2010
Authored by Mandriva | Site mandriva.com

Mandriva Linux Security Advisory 2010-257 - The setup_arg_pages function in fs/exec.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36, when CONFIG_STACK_GROWSDOWN is used, does not properly restrict the stack memory consumption of the environment for a 32-bit application on a 64-bit platform, which allows local users to cause a denial of service via a crafted exec system call, a related issue to CVE-2010-2240. drivers/media/video/v4l2-compat-ioctl32.c in the Video4Linux implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36 on 64-bit platforms does not validate the destination of a memory copy operation, which allows local users to write to arbitrary kernel memory locations, and consequently gain privileges, via a VIDIOCSTUNER ioctl call on a /dev/video device, followed by a VIDIOCSMICROCODE ioctl call on this device. Various other issues have been addressed as well.
