CVE-2015-1270

Status Candidate

Overview

The ucnv_io_getConverterName function in common/ucnv_io.cpp in International Components for Unicode (ICU), as used in Google Chrome before 44.0.2403.89, mishandles converter names with initial x- substrings, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (read of uninitialized memory) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file.

Ubuntu Security Notice 2740-1 - Atte Kettunen discovered that ICU incorrectly handled certain converter names. If an application using ICU processed crafted data, a remote attacker could possibly cause it to crash. It was discovered that ICU incorrectly handled certain memory operations when processing data. If an application using ICU processed crafted data, a remote attacker could possibly cause it to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking the program. Various other issues were also addressed.

Ubuntu Security Notice 2677-1 - An uninitialized value issue was discovered in ICU. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service. A use-after-free was discovered in the GPU process implementation in Chromium. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking the program. Red Hat Security Advisory 2015-1499-01 - Chromium is an open-source web browser, powered by WebKit. Several flaws were found in the processing of malformed web content. A web page containing malicious content could cause Chromium to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Chromium. All Chromium users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain Chromium version 44.0.2403.89, which corrects these issues. After installing the update, Chromium must be restarted for the changes to take effect.
